1. What is a Chromebook? What can it do?
A Chromebook is a “laptop” that runs on Google’s web-based Chrome operating system. Its primary function is to connect to the internet. While there is very limited storage space available, most documents and apps exist in the cloud when using a Chromebook.
2. Can we buy our own Chromebook instead of using the school issued Chromebook?
Unfortunately, no. All Chromebooks used in the classroom must be district-issued since Chromebooks will be logged into the district network while in use.
3. Since you’re using G Suite for Education, will Google sell or share student information?
No. The information in your child’s Google account is private and will not be shared or sold.
4. Can our student bring in a laptop instead of using the district-issued Chromebook?
No. As in question #2, all devices used in the classroom need to be the district-issued Chromebook to ensure safety and security.
5. Will students be expected to use the Chromebook for school-related activities only?
During the school day, Chromebooks will be used for school purposes in the classroom and students will be able to access any web-based resource allowed through the school’s internet filter. At home, students can access anything that their parents allow. Since the Chromebook is a district-owned device, Canton Academy guidelines are in effect at any time the Chromebook is used, whether at school or home.
6. What happens if my student’s Chromebook gets stolen or damaged at school? Who will be responsible for that?
If the Chromebook is stolen or damaged, the student is responsible for the full cost of replacement or repairs.
7. Are the Chromebooks uniquely assigned to a specific student?
Yes. Each Chromebook has a unique asset tag that is assigned to a particular student. In addition, each charger has a unique asset tag that is assigned to a particular student.
8. Will my student be using the same Chromebook each year?
Yes. Chromebooks will be assigned to the same student each year.
9. What happens if my student’s Chromebook is not working? Will he be given a loaner to use for class?
If the Chromebook is not working, the student needs to contact the technology director. At that time, he/she will determine if a loaner will be issued. Any and all repairs will be charged to the student/parent.
10. What will my student do if we don’t have wifi access at home?
While there are various locations in the county that offer free wifi service, Google is specifically designed so that students can download work to their Google Drive, complete it and then sync with their Google account once they reconnect with wifi at the school.
11. Will there be charging stations at the school?
stations will not be available at the school. The Chromebook has a battery
capacity of 10 hours when fully charged. Students will need to routinely charge
their Chromebooks overnight prior to coming to school the next day.
12. Will you be able to secure the internet connection when my student uses the Chromebook outside of school?
No. Canton Academy is unable to provide any filtering software when a student accesses internet connections outside of the school. Therefore, the students and their parents/guardians bear sole responsibility for exercising appropriate internet guidelines and for abiding by state and federal laws and regulations. The student’s use of the district issued Chromebook at home and outside of school, however, is subject to the school’s discipline policies.
13. How will inappropriate use of the Chromebook be addressed?
Students using the school-issued Chromebook in school and outside of school are expected to comply with school policies. Violations of any of these policies or agreements are subject to student disciplinary action under the school’s handbook.
